It’s funny how one small article or incident can make you think of a topic to speak about. I was going through a document that we send to customers called an SAQ. You’re probably aware of an FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions). An SAQ is similar, but instead of frequent, it stands for Should Ask Questions. A better way of putting it is these are the questions you wish customers would ask, but don’t.
In that SAQ, I saw the question, “What is one of the main benefits of 5S Methodology?” Although there’s many answers as to why the 5S Methodology is so important, the number one reason is safety! Since the name of this Podcast is “Warehouse Safety Tips”, singling out safety as a topic probably doesn’t come as a surprise. It was the second part of the answer that caught my eye, and it’s something that you’ll find fitting as well.
Safety is most important because your workers are your most valuable asset! In a previous episode, we spoke about how people can become oblivious to the safety markings around them. The second part of the SAQ made reference to people saying, “I’ve done it that way a million times before, but this time…” The portion that follows this time in stories like that range from scares to fatalities, and everything in-between. Most importantly, they point out that the one time you take your head and focus off of a swivel, disaster can strike. Safety isn’t something you can employ part-time. It’s something you need to make a part of your full-time mindset. In doing so, everyone gets to go home in one piece, and you will have “peace of mind”.
