For the third week in a row, I’ve opted to break the rule of keeping information evergreen, to further discuss the Coronavirus Pandemic that we’re in the midst of. I bring it up because during this pandemic, we’ve seen things happen that we never would’ve believed, had we not experienced it ourselves. Did you ever think you’d see the Disney Parks or the famous Las Vegas Strip shutdown and empty? Did you think you’d ever see all sporting events, including the Olympic Games canceled? Those examples are some of the more extreme measures that have taken place, but there are thousands of other ways this pandemic has changed everyday life. Because of this, the title for our episode this week is “Time For A Change”.

Last Three S’s of 6S Methodology

Sometimes change can be very hard to make or enforce, but many times (such as what we’re going through right now), it’s a must. During emergencies, you have to do whatever it takes to survive. Luckily for us, that’s not usually the case. What is business as usual is the last 3 S’s of the 6S Methodology (which we covered in a previous episode), and that is standardization, safety, and sustaining.

Here’s the breakdown of each step:

  • Standardize- Revisit the first three S’s: sort, straighten (also referred to as set in order), and shine, on a regular and frequent basis, and evaluate the condition of the workplace.

  • Safety- The addition of safety means you should constantly be looking around your facility to identify issues that can affect your staff, production, service, or your overall facility, and work to eliminate those issues.

  • Sustain- Maintain the standard and improve every day. This S allows you to strive for continuous improvement!

Don’t Wait For An Accident to Practice Good Habits

We mentioned change can sometimes be very hard to make and enforce. Adopting the attitude of “We’ve always done it that way, or being close-minded to change is a recipe for trouble. If you’ve ever had the misfortune of attending a funeral, one of the things you’ll often hear are people saying, “It shouldn’t take an event like this for us to get together. Let’s make it a point to change that going forward.” The same thing happens when there’s an accident at work. People state they’re going to pay attention and follow the rules much closer. The reactions and intentions surrounding both of these situations are genuine at the time they occur. But after time, the reactions and intentions lose strength, and don’t resurface until the next situation occurs.

You’ve got to constantly be on the lookout for ways to eliminate, add, and change procedures.  Most importantly, procedures must be enforced to keep your facility as safe, productive, and organized as it can possibly be.
