In this episode, we’re going to provide a few answers to the question, “Why is safety and organization so important?”
Have you ever received a ticket from law enforcement for going slightly over the speed limit, or just barely missing a yellow light and running a red? While it’s easy to complain because your time was wasted while you were stopped and now you have to pay a fine, it’s important to understand that these things are in place for your own safety and, more importantly, for the safety of others. The same goes for working in a factory, warehouse, or anywhere with safety markings that you’re supposed to be paying attention to. Signs and their colors give you guidance for how to conduct yourself within an area, in order to ensure your utmost safety. When you think of it THAT way, your entire outlook on these guiding measures should change.
Now that we’ve covered ways safety and organization are conducted outside of your facility, let’s take a look at how they correlate to the inside of your workplace. Years ago I worked as a plain-clothed security officer. I would be placed in a facility with a job that took me all over the place – such as a janitor or forklift driver. My primary job was to investigate issues that had occurred, and also keep my eye on current situations and individuals. While doing that job at an Aluminum Foundry, a Tow Motor Driver made several horrible decisions. He was driving his tow motor way too fast, while carrying his load way too high, and he took what he thought would be a short cut – over designated safety tape and into a walkway. As if all that wasn’t enough, he was high at the time. When someone exited a door in front of him, he slammed on his brakes and spilled his load of molten aluminum, killing the person in front of him immediately.
It could have been a lot different though. A fellow co-worker or management could have seen just one of his mistakes and called him on it. He may have reacted the same way as the person that was warned or ticketed for running the traffic light, or speeding. And I’m sure a night off without pay, a suspension, an action plan, and/or being fired, might have made him say, “I just made a mistake! Why do they have to make a Federal Case out of it.” But in the case of the Traffic Light, Speeding, and tow motor stories – we know things can end much differently than just something that requires a slap on the hand. This is why paying attention to safety and organization is of the utmost importance.
People, products, and/or property can be hurt and damaged. Production time can be delayed or stopped altogether, and in the worst cases – lives can be lost.
Hopefully this podcast will cause you to look at the Safety Markings in and out of your facility much closer. Just know that when it comes to safety and organization, there’s a much bigger picture at work than you might realize.
