Today we want to welcome Kevin Lawton of The New Warehouse Podcast. You can find him online at TheNewWarehouse.com. We asked Kevin if he’d share his top ten warehouse safety tips. Here they are:
When operating PIT (Power Industrial Trucks), be sure to travel with your forks as low as possible. This ensures safety for both equipment and staff.
Be sure to enforce the small things. It contributes to the overall safety culture.
Wear gloves and protective equipment.
Assure that eye contact (A.K.A. 2-Way Recognition) is always made between tow or lift truck operators and pedestrians. If you see the driver, that doesn’t mean they see you, and vice versa.
Be sure to always pick up debris (tape, trash, pieces of pallets, etc…) in your facility.
If you see something, say something. If something looks “off”, it might be and should be addressed. Better safe than sorry!
Proper investigation is a must for all incidents. Take action to constantly improve your safety culture from those investigations.
Be sure to always secure loads, especially when traveling.
Document everything, and create SOP (Standard Operating Procedures) to back up all activities. Train those SOP’s to every staff member.
Communicate and engage with staff. Don’t just hear what your staff says; listen to them. Let them know you’re interested in constant and never ending improvement when it comes to your safety culture, and that they have a voice.
Thank you for listening to Warehouse Safety Tips – and have SAFE day!
