How many times have you or someone around you taken off your head, lung, eye, hand, back, or hearing protection because it was uncomfortable or inconvenient? Similarly, how many times have you paid attention to every piece of safety tape, sign, and marking in a facility? Sometimes, ignoring these precautions is not intentional. Other times, it’s because of sweat or heat fogging up vision to the point that safety equipment has to be removed temporarily in order to wipe or clean it. Another possibility is the gear restricts one’s access (for example, if someone was trying to look at something, but a hard hat or glasses was in the way or falling off due to the angle of their head).
As with previous episodes, we’re still in the midst of the Coronavirus Pandemic. While I’ve been apologizing for breaking the Podcasting and Blogging Rule of keeping information evergreen, something occurred to me while preparing for the info today. I realized that safety is always changing.
Sure, the Coronavirus is going to bring about lots of social distancing and enhanced observation of hygiene procedures. However, more changes unrelated to the pandemic will come as well. The changes may be from someone getting injured or killed doing something while completing a task that there previously wasn’t a safety procedure for. In another case, maybe an even stronger virus will come about, or some other event related to technology that we don’t even know about yet. The point is, things are always changing, and we need to know, respect, and adhere to all the safety equipment, tape, signs, markings, and guidelines in our facilities. You, or one of your fellow staff, might think you know better. What you must understand, however, is that all the rules are in place for a reason, and that’s to keep you safe.
