Did you ever go on a Scavenger Hunt as a kid? There is a good chance you may have even taken part in one as an adult. Regardless of if you have, you know just how much fun they can be. In a scavenger hunt, the rules are pretty easy to understand. Those participating can work either individually or as a team. An organizer creates a list of items that must be found. Sometimes they know where the items are, while other times they might randomly create a list and leave you to find the items, wherever they might be. The participants are then told they have a certain amount of time to go and gather these items. The individual or team that comes back with the most verified items from the list wins. With today’s technology, verification is usually done with a picture or video taken with a smartphone. You might be thinking, “I loved that trip down memory lane, but what does it have to do with work, and specifically safety?”

Workplace Fun Doesn’t Have to Be Expensive

Have you ever heard of those retreats that businesses send their executives to? Instead of a work environment, everything is based on play. They don’t sit around a wood or glass table in ergonomic chairs , but instead, they sit in a circle in large beanbags. There are no clocks, as time is  instead measured by songs on a jukebox. And instead of suits and dresses, the executives wear sweatpants and t-shirts. Now why do companies do this? They do it to break their employees' tunnel vision, and to relax their minds. This way, they can open up their minds to new ideas.

Here’s the catch: you don’t have to travel to an expensive retreat to make safety fun. You can accomplish it with a good ‘ole Scavenger Hunt. Think of all the versions you could come up with to improve safety in your facility. Here are a few examples:

  • You could send people out to search for as many instances of safety as they could find.

  • You could have them take pictures of situations they think could use safety, or where safety wasn’t being recognized. Not to punish, but to improve!

In a previous episode, we discussed the importance of getting out of the office and into the facility.  Not only is this better than a stuffy meeting, but it allows you to see the good and bad of your facility, which can lead to opportunities to improve efficiency and safety inside your facility. We hope you have fun, and most of all, keep your staff and facility safer than ever!
