One of the easiest traps you can fall into as management is not getting out on the floor, or not regularly speaking with the staff that works on the floor. I call it a trap because:
If you really want to know what’s happening at your facility, you have to leave your office.
This means not just flying by, but hopping right into the action
When it comes to ideas, you want to get them from contributors outside of management.
Listen to the things your staff tells you, as they’re the ones actually using the your facility and it’s equipment
The 3rd S of the 5S Methodology is Shine. While shine sounds like it just means keeping your facility clean and shining, it means much more than that. Improvement of the efficiency and safety processes within your facility is also part of it. And when you combine the 5th S of the 5S Methodology (Sustain), you’re not just maintaining, but implementing improvements whenever you can.
The main way to find possible improvements is by taking the ideas of staff into consideration. As management, although you may have worked in the position of the staff you’re now in charge of,, you still need a constant finger on the pulse of your facility. There’s no better way to do that than by getting out into your facility. Many times, when people see management coming, they associate it with negativity. While out and about, be sure to give recognition to your staff. Doing this will encourage interaction and feedback, which will allow you to see what you could hypothetically implement to improve efficiency and safety.
