Although the COVID-19 Pandemic has made the acronym PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) an almost by the minute reference within the media, it’s nothing new. But, it might be something you didn’t pay as much attention to as you do now. Since it can pertain to viruses, most people are likely associating PPE to various masks. PPE, however, comes in many forms including, but not limited to:
Hard hats
Safety glasses, goggles, and shields
Earplugs and earmuffs
Masks and respirators
Reflective vests
Safety harnesses
Back braces
Fire retardant uniforms
Gloves
Boots (slip resistant and steel-toed)
Full body suits
While this list doesn’t showcase all the PPE you’ll encounter (nor does it represent all the variations of those items, as different jobs have different needs and requirements), it gives a great representation of what PPE stands for in the workplace.
Have you ever heard the saying, “Knowledge is power?” What if I told you it’s not true? At least not as perceived. While having knowledge can certainly be a great thing, it’s only useful if you do something with it. Therefore, a more detailed saying would be, “Applied knowledge is power.”
The same thing applies to PPE. You can have some, or all of the previously mentioned PPE items in your possession. However, if you don’t use them properly, they’ll do you no good. Using them properly includes using them all of the time. Accidents can happen at any time, which means you have to be ready for anything all the time. I can’t tell how many times I, or someone I was working with, took off PPE to wipe their head of sweat, wipe off the equipment itself, or remove a harness for just a second. It’s that second that management would come over and tell us to put it back on. They aren’t doing it to bust your chops, but because that couple of seconds or minutes is where accidents happen. It’s their job to keep you safe, and the facility accident free. It’s also your job! So next time you’re working, don’t just have PPE with you. Make sure you apply it!
