There is a book titled, “All I Really Need To Know I Learned In Kindergarten.” I bring it up because many of the rules you had growing up are similar to those practiced at work. Some of the most obvious ones have been covered and covered again during the COVID-19 Pandemic, which is not going anywhere when sick, washing your hands, and covering your mouth when coughing or sneezing. Today we’re talking about keeping things clear. That topic has several different ways it can go, but today we’ll be covering three ways it applies.
Our first definition of keeping things clear is no different than straightening up as a kid. With 5S, it’s referred to as, “A place for everything, and everything in its place.” At work, make sure your area is safe, organized, and clear from any obstacles that could keep you from doing your job in the most effective manner.
Our second definition of keeping things clear is likened to taking out the trash. Debris in the workplace is a no-no on countless levels. This includes, but by no means is limited to:
Making sure all trash is thrown away in your area as it accumulates.
Assuring your trash is emptied at the end of your shift so the team member that follows you has a clean work area.
Keeping the area where trash is taken clean and organized. This may require running or emptying a compactor (if authorized to do so).
Keeping all areas, especially walk and traffic zones, free of any spills or debris that could cause falls, accidents, or damage to shoes and tires.
Our third, and final definition of keeping things clear is staying out of the way, which can save your or a staff member’s life. This includes, but is not limited to:
Stay out of traffic lanes and make sure those on equipment can see you at all times.
Stay out of the way of fire exits, fire extinguishers, eye washing areas, loading areas, first aid areas, electrical panels, and emergency exits.
Stay clear of fellow staff to assure you can all perform your job duties efficiently.
Again, most of this is common sense, and we should have learned versions of them from an early age. Regardless of if you knew them already, or if you just learned about them today, put them to use in your daily routines. Doing so will keep things clear and contribute to you having a safe day at work.
