On today’s episode, we’re going to be talking about the second S of the 5S Methodology: STRAIGHTEN.

Last week, we made the decision to focus on weekly episodes of each step within the 5S Methodology. We started with the first S, which is SORT. Sorting, as it pertains to safety, is determining the things that are essential from the things that are not essential.

This week we’re moving on to the next S, which is STRAIGHTEN. Straightening, as it pertains to safety, is making everything that’s essential easily and efficiently accessible. In addition, it allows for a system of always knowing where those essential items are, who’s using them, and where they go when no longer needed. Another phrase for this step is, "Set in Order". In addition to what was mentioned above, it also entails making sure items are organized by priority of use. Following this step allows you to keep your tools available to those that need them when they need them the most.

Next week what we’re going to be talking about is the next step, which is SHINE. It goes beyond simply cleaning, but we’ll make sure that we go through and cover that in detail!
